Just Add Code

DevConnections – Customizing the SharePoint Mobile Experience

Here is the deck and code I presented at last week’s SharePoint Connections conference in Las Vegas.  The deck stands alone pretty well as an overview to what you can do with SharePoint’s mobile experience.  The code gets much deeper and actually implements a SharePoint aware mobile control that you can put in one of your customized templates, and a custom field with different support for rendering on a mobile device.

While putting this presentation together I looked for other examples of people actively utilizing and customizing SharePoint’s mobile abilities and came up empty.  If you are already doing something mobile with SharePoint or you check out the code and start going down that path, let me know.  I’m interested in seeing who else out there is looking into this stuff.

    Hi,

Saw the deck and code. Very useful.
Where would I see the web cast for this particular mobile development to see demos that you performed?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again,

    Kirit,

Glad you liked the deck and code. Unfortunately, DevConnections doesn’t tape their sessions, so there isn’t any place where you can view my presentation. I gave this presentation in 2007 and at the time there really wasn’t any SharePoint mobile information. The same is pretty true now, not too many people have really looked into how to customize the mobile experience for their users. If you had a specific area you were interested in learning more about I’d like to know what it is. It might finally motivate me to do another post. :)

You can also swing by #sharepoint on irc.freenode.net if you have other questions. Its not a very active channel, but if you can stay on long enough someone can usually help out.

    Hi Neil,

Thanks for responding so quickly. I am trying to learn and interested in creating a home page of a MOSS site (publishing site) to have a different look and feel with filtered functionality (Links) rather than entire intranet site. So basically looking into http://mobile.microsoft.com kind of look for our company’s intranet. Variation is one think I looked into little bit, but not satisfied to a point where I can call that as way to customize mobile views. Any help in this track should be useful to lot of people, since you correctly pointed out, there isn’t too much out in this particular area.

    - Thanks
    Kirit

I haven’t had a chance to do anything with this yet. There is a newish mobile framework out there though that looks interesting.
